Why We Don't Recommend Balloon Releases
We love balloons, but we care about the environment too. That's why we don't recommend releasing balloons outdoors. Once released, balloons travel for miles before falling back to earth as litter, causing real harm to wildlife and the countryside.
The Environmental Impact
When balloons are released outdoors, they don't simply disappear. They can travel hundreds of miles before deflating and falling back to the ground, or into rivers, lakes and the sea. What goes up must come down, and when it does, it becomes litter in our countryside and waterways.
Wildlife mistakes balloon fragments for food. Birds, marine animals and livestock can choke on deflated balloons or become entangled in ribbons and strings. Research has shown that balloons are one of the highest-risk litter items for seabirds.
Even so-called "biodegradable" latex balloons take months or years to break down, more than long enough to cause harm. Foil balloons don't biodegrade at all and can also cause power outages if they come into contact with electricity lines.
